How do you decide between ice and heat? Easy.

Is there swelling around the joint or muscle? Ice it.  

Is the tendon and/or joint stiff? Heat it.

That being said, people's bodies are different. I've had patients who've felt better after icing a stiff tendon, so at the end of the day,  do what feels right for you.
